Twitter reacts as Hillingdon Council offer free school meals over half-term

As Hillingdon Council announces plans to offer eligible children free school meals over the half term holidays, we check out the reaction on Twitter.


On Thursday evening, local Conservative MPs in parliament vocally opposed providing free school meals to eligible children. On Friday evening, just as children had broken up from school, the Conservative run Hillingdon Council announced it would offer help feed the eligible children instead.

This has seen a massive response on Twitter.


Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford MBE, who has helped lead the campaign on free school meals, shared the news on his timeline.


The news was near universally appreciated:


John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, said that the decision was a 'snub for Boris Johnson'

Hillingdon resident Aakash Naik noted that the Council's commitment was only for the October Half-term, and not for the Christmas or Easter holidays. He asked the Council to provide commitments for those holiday periods too:


David Simmonds MP, is also a Councillor in the borough. Despite having vocally opposed direct government support for free school meals during the coming holiday periods in parliament, he seemed happy to support his Council's decision (whilst taking an dig at Labour......)
