A community event that mixed local competition with family fun unfolded at the Great Barn. The Ruislip Central Horticultural Society’s Annual Spring Show offered both serious horticultural displays and practical gardening tips for all ages.
The event, held on Sunday, 30th March 2025, saw dozens of local residents gather at the historic Great Barn in Ruislip.
The day featured not only competitive displays from experienced gardeners but also a dedicated schools competition. The society provided local schools with planters, soil, bulbs, and other gardening essentials, and the participating schools planted and cared for their displays. This initiative highlighted the creative spirit and enthusiasm of young horticulturists, providing a hands-on learning experience that promises to nurture future gardening talent.

Councillor Corthorne, who attended the show, remarked, "Events like the Ruislip Central Horticultural Society’s Spring Show truly highlight the dedication and passion of our local gardening community. I was especially impressed by the schools' competition – it was good to see so many young people involved, which bodes well for the future of our local horticulture."
Warren Reeves, Chairman of the Society, noted that the show served as an important platform for local gardeners to exchange ideas and techniques. "We were pleased to host this event and showcase local talent. It’s not only about competition; it’s about strengthening our community through our shared interests in horticulture," Reeves explained.
A special feature of the day was the introduction of Mother’s Day cream teas. The treat quickly became a hit, with freshly baked scones selling out as visitors enjoyed a traditional cream tea experience. Anne, 83, who attended with her daughter Julie, said, "It was such a lovely afternoon. The scones were delicious, and it was wonderful to enjoy a proper cream tea with my daughter."
Beyond the competitions and culinary treats, the event provided ample opportunity for community networking and learning. Exhibitors and gardening experts were on hand to offer practical advice and share innovative gardening techniques, reinforcing the event’s role as a hub for local horticultural knowledge.
Looking ahead, the Ruislip Central Horticultural Society is already planning its next major event—a huge plant sale scheduled for May. This upcoming sale is expected to attract even more local gardening enthusiasts, offering them a chance to purchase a wide range of plants and gardening essentials while further supporting the society’s mission of promoting horticultural education and community engagement.
