Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed that the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be included in 'wave 1' of the scheme, with construction projects expected to be completed between 2025 and 2030.

The approval comes in the wake of a critical 2018 report by the Care Quality Commission, which rated the hospital as ‘inadequate’ due to concerns over maintenance, infection control, and capacity. Additionally, patients reported difficulties navigating the hospital’s complex layout, reinforcing the urgent need for significant improvements.

The redevelopment aims to deliver a state-of-the-art hospital for Hillingdon residents, addressing long-standing issues, including structural elements dating back to the 1940s that have rendered parts of the facility unsafe. Designed with sustainability in mind, the new hospital will feature digitally enhanced facilities while maintaining the full range of services currently provided by the trust. The project is intended to improve patient care, enhance working conditions for staff, and better serve the local community.

A spokesperson for the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:

"This redevelopment is a crucial step forward in ensuring we can provide the highest standard of care in a modern, safe, and sustainable environment. Our staff and patients deserve the very best facilities, and this investment will allow us to continue delivering high-quality healthcare for generations to come."

The new hospital will include a modernized emergency department, improved maternity and neonatal units, and upgraded surgical theatres with the latest medical technology. Patient rooms will be designed for increased comfort, with more single-occupancy rooms to enhance privacy and infection control. The redevelopment will also prioritize accessibility, ensuring that the hospital is easy to navigate with clear signage, open spaces, and intuitive layouts. In addition, the project will integrate green technology, including energy-efficient systems and eco-friendly building materials, reducing the hospital’s environmental footprint while ensuring operational sustainability for future generations.

Further details of the redevelopment reveal plans for expanded outpatient services, improved diagnostic facilities, and the incorporation of cutting-edge medical imaging technology. A new integrated care model will be introduced to enhance collaboration between departments, aiming for more efficient patient flow and reduced waiting times. Additionally, mental health services will be given a dedicated space, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to healthcare provision.

In a statement to Hillingdon Vision, Uxbridge MP Danny Beales welcomed the government’s decision, saying:

“I am delighted that Hillingdon Hospital has been included in the Government’s first wave of new hospitals, with construction set to begin in the first term of a Labour government—honouring commitments made before the election.

I would like to thank the team at Hillingdon Hospital for their tireless efforts in advocating for better facilities for their patients. I also extend my gratitude to our incredible NHS staff, who have been working under incredibly difficult conditions. I hope this announcement provides reassurance that change is on the way, and we will deliver the modern hospital they and their patients deserve.”

Commenting on the redevelopment, a local Conservative representative stated:

"While we welcome investment in Hillingdon Hospital, it is vital that the project remains on schedule and within budget. Residents have been waiting for these improvements for years, and we will hold the government accountable to ensure that promises are met. Our priority is that patients receive the care they need in a well-equipped, modern facility."
