New blog launches to celebrate community and challenge hate

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

Staff and students from Brunel’s Creative Writing Department have started a new blog aiming to celebrate diversity and challenge hate. Entitled ‘Hillingdon Voices United’, the blog will feature posts by members of the Hillingdon community, each sharing their personal stories, discussing identity, culture, community, faith and more.

The project is supported by Hillingdon Council’s Stronger Communities team and is funded by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). Emma Filtness, lecturer in Creative Writing at Brunel and co-founder of the blog, commented: "One of the things I love about literature and creative writing is the power of stories to encourage empathy, to help people understand what it's like to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. I wanted to create a platform for local voices where people could share their stories and discuss topics like identity, culture, community. I wanted it to be a celebration of diversity but also to work to challenge stereotypes and tackle hate, and to get my student writers involved in the project. As a locally-based writer myself I'm passionate about community engagement and outreach and wanted to empower my student writers to use their writing for social change." If you live, work, or study in Hillingdon and are interested in contributing to the blog, they ask you email hillingdonvoicesunited@gmail.com or contact them via their website.
