Labour announce former Taxi Driver as candidate for Council by-election

Updated: Mar 20, 2021

Steve Garelick, former Taxi Driver and London Regional Organiser for GMB, has been announced as Labour’s candidate to fight the upcoming Charville Ward Council by-election.

The by-election, which will take place on May 6, has been called following the death of Cllr Neil Fyfe in November last year. Cllr Fyfe had served as a Conservative member of the Council since being first elected in May 2010.

As the GMB’s London Regional Organiser, Garlick has helped lead multiple campaigns to improve the pay and conditions of gig economy workers and professional drivers.

Significantly, In 2017, Garelick led a campaign against Uber which resulted in the franchise having its licence to operate in London withdrawn.

Commenting on his selection, Steve Garelick said:

Residents in large parts of the borough are not being listened to, and if elected, I vow to be their champion and their voice in Hillingdon.

I have a record as someone who stands up to injustice and if elected, I will do that diligently for the residents of Charville”.

The full list of candidates standing in the Charville Ward by-election will be announced when nominations close on April 8.
