How to mentally refresh after a stressful day

Daily life is full of stress these days. From work, to family and everything in between… life can be stressful.

Let’s face it: quite often, stressful situations in your life are unavoidable… but you can arm yourself with selfcare practices to boost your resilience and help destress you at the end of a long day… here’s what you can do.

Meditate

Meditation can feel impossible when you’re stressed, but there are plenty of apps and videos out there now to help guide you through it and there’s lots of wonderful benefits. You can find out more about the benefits of meditation here. Slow, controlled breaths can help calm your nervous system and can help you sleep. You can do as little as 5 minutes a day to get yourself started.

Great mindfulness apps include Calm and Headspace.

Write it down

Journaling can be a great way to release your thoughts. You can start by writing down anything on your mind from worries, anxious thoughts and even things that are positive or you’re looking forward to. Getting it on paper can help you understand them more clearly and help you to process everything. It can also help you to look at things a little more objectively.

Move your body

Don’t expect to do a full on intense workout every day, we know that’s not always possible. Just try to take some time to get some movement in your day… your body and mind will thank you!

This could include going for a walk in the evening after work to clear your mind. Fresh air helps send plenty of oxygen through the lungs and help them work at their full capacity… and could help boost your mood.

If you can, a good way to get a bit of a refresh is with a lunchtime stroll.

Digital Detox

You may have been at a desk all day or plugged in some way… take some time in the evening to ‘switch off’. Social media can have a detrimental effect on our mental health and although there are a lot of positive benefits, it’s not always the best place to turn to for some relaxation after a long day. You could even just mute notifications for the evening… that’s a great place to start.

Run a bath

Taking a bath after a stressful day can help you to relax both physically and mentally. Adding things like candles and relaxing music can really add to the ambience. Grab yourself a book or a podcast and relax back in a nice soak. A warm bath can also soothe any aching, tense muscles.

Start a new hobby

Don’t forget about the therapeutic nature of hobbies… refill your cup! If you love something, why not make it a hobby. They’re great outlets for personal creativity and provides you with something to look forward to after work. It doesn’t have to be skill based… just something you love and enjoy.

Stress is often unavoidable, but making time for your mental health can make it a lot easier to handle challenges when they come along… so make time for self-care.
