Hayes and Yeading knocked out of FA Cup on penalties

Hayes and Yeading United, of the Southern League Premier Division South, have been knocked out of the FA Cup to League 2’s Carlisle United on penalties.

Despite sitting 73 places, 3 divisions, behind in the league, Hayes and Yeading more than held their own against Carlisle.

Throughout the first 90 minutes there were good chances for both sides. When the whistle blew to end normal time however, the result stood 0-0.

With no clear winner, the game was taken to extra-time. It was here that the game really came alive as 4 goals were scored within 30 minutes.

Hayes and Yeading struck first in the 104th minute with Omar Rowe scoring from inside the Carlisle penalty area. Their lead was doubled 5 minutes later as Amos Rasha scored an excellent long-range strike from outside the box, beating Carlisle’s keeper Marcus Dewhurst.

Hayes and Yeading’s lead wasn’t to last for long. In the 118th minute, following a set piece situation, Carlisle United’s Jon Mellish scored a left footed shot from outside the Hayes and Yeading box. This was shortly followed by another Carlisle goal, once again from Mellish, in added time.

With the game all level at the end of play, the game was taken to penalties. From the first set of penalties, the teams drew 3-3. This took the game to sudden death. Here, Carlisle’s Gavin Reilly was able to capitalise on a miss from Hayes and Yeading’s Liam McDevitt, taking them into the second round of the FA Cup.

The FA Cup second round draw will take place on Monday at 7pm live on BBC Two. The round will be played at the end of the month.
