Government overlooks fraud and computer misuse offences when making false claims on falling crime

Our Conservative MPs, Messrs Johnson and Simmonds should apologise to the thousands of people in the London area who fell victim to fraud last year.

Analysis by Hillingdon Liberal Democrats reveals there were more than 77,000 fraud and computer misuse offences referred to the Met Police last year - up 26% on the year before. This is the equivalent of 200 cases each day across London (excluding the City!). These victims are part of the four million people across England and Wales who were duped by fraudsters and online scammers last year.

Following a LibDem letter of complaint, the UK Statistics Authority recently rebuked Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Home Secretary Priti Patel, for misleadingly claiming that crime had fallen, when it has in fact, risen.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng then claimed that fraud isn’t something people experience in their day-to-day lives. Conservative ministers are causing immense hurt to fraud victims by dismissing this cruel crime. I’ve suffered, and I know people around here have lost savings to remorseless scammers, suffering financial and emotional harm.

I’ve asked before, without getting a response, but perhaps our MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, David Simmonds, might now tell us whether he thinks it’s ok for our politicians to lie?
