After 20 years, Cllr Sir Ray Puddifoot MBE has announced that he will be stepping down as the leader Hillingdon Council in the new year.
Cllr Puddifoot was first elected as a Councillor in 1998 and has was elected as Hillingdon Council's leader in 2000. His 20 years at the helm make him London's longest serving Council leader.
In a statement published by the Council, Puddifoot said “It has been both an honour and a privilege to serve as Leader of Hillingdon Council, which is now recognised as one of the best Councils in the country”.
“However, for family reasons, made the decision that I would not stand again for a Councillor in May 2022, I will formally leave Office at the Council meeting on Thursday 14th January 2021 when a new leader is elected”.
Responding to the resignation, the Hillingdon Labour group commented in a Tweet “For many of us, including Ray, serving the public as an elected councillor stems from a sense of duty and it is never easy to leave. On behalf of the HIllingdon Labour Group, we wish Ray and his family well”.
