Council employee arrested following serious collision in Harefield

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

A council refuse lorry crashed earlier today on Harvil Road, Harefield causing major disruption to residents locally.

A refuse lorry owned by the London Borough of Hillingdon was involved in a road traffic collision earlier today (7th July 2022). Witness say they saw the lorry driving erratically before seeing it swerve off of the road and into a field where it came to a halt on its side.

Officers from the Metropolitan police attended the scene and a full road closure is currently in place. During the incident the vehicle struck a telephone pole supporting telephone and broadband cables to local premises. The telegraph pole was so badly damaged in the impact it was snapped in to two and left hanging precariously from the wires it was intended to support.

Residents face long periods of disruption with the road closed and expected to remain closed for a number of hours whilst BT Openreach engineers make the area safe, unfortunately this will mean disconnecting the telephone service for a number of local residents. Those with a loss of service can expect to wait a few days for a replacement pole to be placed and the cables to be reattached.

Although nobody was seriously hurt in the incident the London ambulance service attended and treated people on the scene for minor injures. Three people have been taken to hospital as a precautions.

During a preliminary investigation of the scene officers undertook a breathalyser test on the driver who subsequently failed. The male was arrested on suspicion of driving over the prescribed alcohol limit.

Hillingdon Council said: "Whilst we can confirm that there was an incident involving one of our agency drivers and a waste removal vehicle yesterday; as this is now being investigated by the police, we cannot comment further at this point.

"Following the conclusion of the police investigation we will carry out our own enquiries and take action as appropriate."
